Chess Sets &
Pieces from Other Countries
What parent or grandparent would not
love the opportunity to give the gift of a magnificent chess set to
their child or grandchild? With all of its challenges for skillful
planning and quick thinking chess has continued to be a popular game
all over the world and throughout the ages.
It is suggested that chess pieces originated in India during the 6th
Century, when the board of a game was called Ashtapada and was
combined with 64 game pieces, representing four warring armies. Each
army set was controlled by one player, and two players teamed up
against the other in a game of war. Europeans quickly picked up on
the game concept during trips to India and adjusted the game to fit
a more medieval standard of two armies pitted against each other,
thus setting the more current look of the European chess set and
pieces and how they moved across the board.
The game also spread into other areas of the world including the
continent of Asia, creating versions such as Changgi (Korean chess,
using flat disc shaped pieces), Makruk (Thai Chess), and Shogi, a
Japanese “Generals” game. Many of these versions contain rules that
change the power of each piece and re-arrange the order of the chess
pieces so that they start in different positions on the board. While
difficult to purchase these unique versions, it is very easy to find
the European chess pieces and the accessories that go with them.
These unique chess boards and sets can be found in most any theme
and style making them great gift ideas or collectors items.
