Staunton Chess Pieces
If you’ve ever been to a Chess
Convention you’ve probably heard mention of the Staunton chess
pieces and been given the history of these beautiful and graceful
pieces.
You’ve probably heard people talking about the fact that the Knights
were modeled after the horses found at the Greek Parthenon or that
the style was invented to combine low cost and simple balanced
pieces.
The Staunton style is deeply engrained in the history of Chess and
probably one of the most popular styles of chess sets available.
Even the governing bodies of chess tournaments typically demand that
Staunton chess pieces and boards are the only ones used in
tournament play.
John Jaques and Son of London were the creators of the first
Staunton chess set back in 1849. The original set was characterized
by gold embossing a leather base on the white King and a small crown
on the summits of the King side Rook and Knight.
Over the past 150 years Staunton chess sets have been sought after
by collectors and there are many different replicas available to the
general buying for home use and docor.
